Stress Busters for Eco-Innovators
Why Less Sleep Isn’t More
When you don’t have enough hours in a day to get all that you want to do, where do you make up the time? Oftentimes, it is by sheering off hours that you would be sleeping. What harm could it do? Continually minimizing the amount of sleep you get has significant health consequences. Sleep is the body's natural way of recharging, allowing cells to repair and regenerate. The deep stages of sleep unleash growth hormones that build rebuild muscles and joints, ensuring our physical resilience. But there's more to sleep than just physical rejuvenation. Adequate sleep is synonymous with improved cognitive functions, including memory, decision-making and creativity. It's no surprise that chronic sleep deprivation is linked to a higher risk of mental health issues, like depression and anxiety. It also impairs judgment, decision-making abilities and can even lead to increased susceptibility to accidents.
Here are some keys to maximizing your sleep hygiene:
- Create a schedule and stick with it—when you eat, when you go to bed and when you wake up.
- Try to get 7-9 hours of sleep regularly.
- Stop using electronics at least one hour before you go to bed.
- Stop eating and drinking alcohol at least 2 hours before you go to bed.
- Sleep in a darkened room and cover up any ambient lights.
- Turn off any noise distractions.
