What If We Succeed? The Unseen Possibilitiees of Climate Action
What if we can vision a better future for ourselves, even given the current climate crisis? According to a recent article in the New York Times by David Gelles, Ayaba Elizabeth Johnson, a coauthor of All We Can Save, counters people who respond to climate news by saying, "We're screwed, so why bother?" She stated, "The temperature could go up to 1.7 cegrees Celsius globally or by three degrees. Hundreds of lives hang in that balance. So it is a huge deal that we get it as right as possible."
Gelles states, “But take a moment to imagine: What if we actually succeed in addressing the climate crisis, and emerge into a new, more bountiful, more prosperous future?” He cites positive advances such as: wind and solar are cheaper than ever; in the United States, “clean power is happening faster than many realize;” Brazil, Indonesia and other countries are reducing deforestation and Ecuador voted to leave some oil in the ground.
We are each living at this pivotal moment for a reason—WHAT IF we were chosen to be here, right now?WHAT IF our calling is to envision the future we want rather than the one we don’t want? Each of us can focus our thoughts on what we can do and then, Just Do It. As I’ve said in earlier blogs, “If you think you can or you think you can’t, you’re right.”
