Traditional Ecological Knowledge Sought by Scientists in Minnesota

Aug 09, 2022

Minnesota Public Radio discussed Traditional Ecological Knowledge (TEK) and its impact upon forestry practices in a story for the feature North Star Journey last month. TEK is a term that is gaining attention because it refers to information about the natural world that is collected by indigenous people. The story states, “TEK differs from what some call scientific or academic ecological knowledge, which often sees humans as separate from Nature.” Rob Croll, who coordinates the climate change program at the Great Lakes Indian Fish and Wildlife Commission (GLIFWC), states that TEK is “really about that relationship between people and the place where they live, and the beings that are there with them.” Tribal elders and harvesters with the GLIFWC were interviewed by scientists to learn how vulnerable certain plant species are to climate change.
