The Earthshot Prize: Empowering Farmers and Reducing Carbon

One of the most brilliant Albert Einstein quotes is, “No problem can be solved from the same level of consciousness that created it.” The Earthshot Prize annually celebrates innovative solutions aimed at fostering a sustainable planet. Its founder, Prince William, stated,“The Earth is at a tipping point. We face a start choice: either we continue as we are and irreparably damage our planet, or we remember our unique power as humans and our continual ability to lead, innovate and problem-solve. Boomitra’s creation by Aadith Moorthy in Kamataka was spurred by a chance encounter with a farmer’s funeral procession. The farmer took his own life because of crop failure. Aadith’s belief was that irresponsible farming practices and feeding a growing population degraded the land and impacted its ability to store carbon. As more carbon enters the atmosphere, warming and acidification perpetuate the problem. Boomitra means “friend of the earth” in Sanskrit.
Collaborating with over 150,000 farmers across diverse geographies, Boomitra leverages satellites and artificial Intelligence to track soil carbon storage improvements. This system allows businesses and governments to purchase verified carbon credits, funneling the majority of proceeds back to the farmers. Boomitra’s innovative approach not only supports a healthier planet by restoring soil and reducing atmospheric carbon, but also empowers farmers with technology to optimize yields and generate sustainable incomes.
