Starting a new habit can be daunting, but James Clear, author of Atomic Habits, offers valuable advice on achieving success. Clear emphasizes the power of small choices that yield significant results, like opting to ride a bike instead of driving or cooking at home instead of ordering takeout. He compares these choices to pivotal moments on a path, stating, “A few productive and healthy choices can make the difference between a good day and a bad one.” To establish a new habit, Clear recommends employing the “2-minute rule.” Begin by defining your goal and then take the initial step that requires just two minutes; for example, for me, to go to bed earlier for a more refreshing start to my workday (and to maximize the benefit of the 10 pm to 2 pm window for the most important sleep), I could create a gateway habit that takes only two minutes to engage in. This could be as simple as reading a single page of a book before bed.
