Stress Busters for Environmental Leaders

BAM! Nail Your Priorities

Feelings are experienced consciously and can be created in our heads based upon events of the past or fears of the future and may not be true. Conversely, our bodies generate emotions, which can serve as a more precise representation of our true feelings. Making decisions based on our authentic emotions allows us to act in our best interests.

Emotions can be categorized as either expanded or contracted. The former supports our happiness and well-being, while the latter restricts us and can lead to fatigue and illness. Examples of expanded emotions include ease, optimism, love and vitality, while contracted emotions include disease, pessimism, fear and low energy.

When you have a lot of work to do and you are not sure what is a priority for you to do, pay attention to your emotions (are they expanded or contracted?) when you ask yourself the following questions (Source: Marci Shimoff):

  1. Does this need to be done? Is this what feels right for me to do?
  2. Does this need to be done by me? If the answer is “no,” delegate. Be honest with yourself. It’s not okay to hang onto work because you think you are the only one who can do it (Is that true?)
  3. Does this need to be done by me, alone? Asking for help will enable you to get more done without being overwhelmed.

#What is the first task you are going to test with these 3 questions?
