Lessons Greta Thunberg Continues to Teach Us

She’s in the news again. This time, for being twice detained by Dutch police at a demonstration that blocked a major highway into The Hague in the Netherlands and then again for blocking a different road leading to the railway station. You probably recall that Greta Thunberg gained notoriety in 2018 when she sat in front of the Swedish parliament every school day for three weeks to protest lack of action on climate change. Now at age 21, she is still staging weekly protests there.

She told reporters why she was protesting now. “We are in a planetary emergency, and we are not going to stand by and let people lose their lives and livelihood and be forced to become climate refuges when we can do something.” She was joined by other protesters from the Extinction Rebellion who waved flags and chanted, “We are unstoppable, another world is possible.”

I remember how moved I was by her speech at the United Nations Climate Action Summit in 2019 where she said, "You have stolen my dreams and my childhood with your empty words. We are in the beginning of a mass extinction and all you can talk about is money and fairytales of eternal economic growth.“

#What impact do her actions have on your beliefs re. climate change progress? Scholars suggest that ways protest help move the needle are that they serve as a powerful platform for raising awareness about the urgency of climate change and its impact on our world. These protests often aim to pressure governments and corporations to adopt more sustainable policies and practices. Climate protests bring together individuals from diverse backgrounds, creating a sense of community and shared purpose among participants. Many climate protests, especially those that emphasize inclusivity and intersectionality, provide a platform for indigenous and marginalized communities to voice their concerns and solutions. On an individual level, participation in climate protests can be a transformative experience, leading participants to reflect on their own lifestyles and choices.
