How the Two Wolves Within Us Shape Our Lives

Every aspect of life has a counterpart, such as good and evil, love and fear, hot and cold. Understanding this principle is key, as it implies that life has two sides. Just like a coin has both heads and tails that are closely intertwined, we can learn a great deal from embracing both sides of life. When we experience sadness, for example, it can help us understand what brings us happiness. The Story of the Two Wolves as told by the Cherokee Nation, highlights this concept. The grandfather in the story explains to his grandson that everyone has two wolves inside them: one that is good and lives in harmony with the world and another that is bad and is filled with anger and conflict. The young boy asked which wolf wins, to which the grandfather replies, quote “The one you feed.”

Test It Out. #For the next couple of days, pay attention to your light and dark sides. Write down decisions you make or thoughts that you have that clearly fit in one side or the other. After a couple of days, look back at your notes. Do you find yourself thinking and doing positive things most of the time or not? If not, how does that make you feel? You have the power to change how you are thinking and acting. Which wolf do you want to feed?
