Stress Busters for Environmental Stewards
How Our Pets Can Regulate Our Moods
Are you a pet owner? Do your furry companions pick up on your moods? Allow me to introduce Beans, my insightful 7-year-old rescued cat, the most perceptive member of my rescued animal family, which includes two dogs, another cat and yes even a rescued fish named Flash (saved from a coy pond, in case you were wondering). But back to Beans. He possesses an uncanny knack for mirroring my emotions. Whether it's through his expressive meows, wide-eyed stares, or flattened ears, Beans never fails to reflect my emotions back to me. For instance, if I hadn't been mindful of my emotional state today, I wouldn't have succeeded in grabbing him before he ran away to return later to eat his companion’s food, once the coast was clear.
Why is this significant? When we allow ourselves to embrace positive emotions, like joy or love, we not only feel happier, but we also attract like-minded individuals. This emotional harmony often leads to higher productivity in our tasks. Conversely, negative emotions, such as fear, anger or depression, attract similar emotions from those around us and may inhibit our ability to achieve our goals.
Here's a thought for you: are you merely reflecting emotions like a thermometer or controlling them like a thermostat? By learning to regulate and understand emotions, we can enhance our overall well-being, productivity, and steer through life challenges with greater ease.
