Stress Busters for Environmental Stewards
A Forgiveness Lesson from Ancient Hawaii
We never know how much we impact each other. An incredible story was told by Dr. Ihaleakala Hew Len, a therapist at a state hospital ward for the criminally insane in Hawaii. The ward was dangerous and staff feared for their safety and often called in sick or quit. Dr. Len never saw patients. What he did was review their files. As he reviewed their files, he would heal the part of himself that was contributing to their behavior. He used an ancient Hawaiian practice of reconciliation and healing called ho’oponopono. After a few months, patients that had to be shackled were allowed to walk freely. Others were getting off their heavy medications. Staff began to enjoy coming to work. If you want to improve your life, you have to heal your life. Dr. Len suggests that whenever a place for healing presents itself in your life, open to the place where the hurt resides within you. Then, with as much feeling as you can, say the four statements in ho’oponopono: I’m sorry. Please forgive me. Thank you. I love you. Say those statements until you feel a stirring of healing within yourself.
